Zion National Park Itinerary: Hikes, Scenic Drives, Stargazing and Hidden Gems
Zion National Park has always been on my bucket list, but this trip was more than just a getaway — it was a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience adventure in a way that felt both grounding and expansive. Here’s a look at the highlights of my Open Sky journey through Zion.
Day 1 – Arrival & Dinner at Black Sage
The adventure began with a warm welcome at Open Sky Zion, a retreat tucked into the red rock landscape of Virgin, Utah. Dinner that evening was at Black Sage, where seasonal, locally sourced ingredients were paired with a thoughtfully curated wine list. It set the tone perfectly — refined yet relaxed, and a reminder of how food can reflect a place.
Day 2 – Climbing Above Zion & Soaring Over Canyons
The morning started with a guided Via Ferrata climb above Zion. With ladders, cables, and sweeping views, it was both exhilarating and accessible — a vertical adventure with no experience required.
Later in the afternoon, I traded the cliffs for the skies on a 35-mile helicopter flight. From above, Kolob Canyons and Red Butte Mountain glowed in shades of deep crimson and orange. Seeing Zion from the air was humbling — the scale and beauty are unlike anything on the ground.
Day 3 – Exploring on Two Wheels & Stargazing at Night
With the sun high, I set out on an e-bike ride along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Pedal-assist bikes made the 18-mile round trip feel effortless, letting me savor the towering cliffs, lush riverbanks, and quiet pauses along the way.
That night, adventure shifted from earth to sky. At Open Sky Zion, I joined a guided stargazing experience. Reclined in zero-gravity pods, with blankets and hot drinks in hand, we peered through telescopes at constellations, galaxies, and clusters that felt almost within reach. Science, story, and stillness blended into an unforgettable evening.
Day 4 – The Narrows: Walking Through Water
No trip to Zion is complete without The Narrows — a trail where the Virgin River itself becomes the path. Guided through cool water and between sandstone walls that soar high overhead, I found myself immersed in both challenge and peace.
Highlights included a riverside breakfast, gearing up with canyon-ready boots and trekking poles, and a picnic lunch tucked into a quiet alcove deep within the canyon. Walking back, the shifting light on the cliffs made every step new. The Narrows wasn’t just a hike — it was a meditation in movement.
Day 5 – Hidden Waterfalls, Slot Canyons & Ancient Petroglyphs
This day was filled with variety and hidden gems.
-
Lower Pine Creek Falls: A short but adventurous hike led to a secluded waterfall — a cool, shaded oasis just off the main road.
-
The Shop Coffee Co.: A midday refuel with sandwiches, smoothies, and pastries in Orderville.
-
UTV + Canyoneering Tour: Off-roading into the backcountry, followed by rappelling down sandstone walls in a private slot canyon. Equal parts adrenaline and awe.
-
Canyon Overlook & Petroglyph Canyon: The day ended with panoramic views from the Canyon Overlook Trail, followed by a short trek to see ancient petroglyphs — including the iconic bighorn sheep carvings.
Reflection
By the end of the trip, I felt both grounded and inspired. Zion is more than cliffs and canyons; it’s a place that invites presence, wonder, and connection. Each day held its own rhythm — whether climbing, biking, hiking, or simply gazing at the stars.
If you’re looking for a mix of adventure and stillness, Zion delivers both in abundance. Under the open sky, I found exactly what I came for — and more.
