Understanding Your Bone Density Results: Why the Numbers Are Only Part of the Story
One of the most common questions I receive from Pilates students is:
“What do my bone density results actually mean?”
It’s an important question because a bone density test provides much more information than simply telling you whether you have osteopenia or osteoporosis.
While your T-score is important, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Understanding your fracture risk—and what you can do to reduce it—can help you make informed decisions about exercise, lifestyle, and your long-term health.
Start with Your Bone Density Report
If you’ve had a bone density (DEXA) scan in British Columbia, you can usually access your results through the BC Health Gateway app or website.
In addition to your T-scores, many reports include your 10-year fracture risk, which estimates the likelihood of experiencing a major osteoporotic fracture over the next decade.
If you can’t access your report online, your physician can provide you with a copy.
Knowing these numbers provides a useful starting point for conversations with your healthcare team.
Understanding FRAX®
Another helpful tool is the FRAX® Fracture Risk Assessment Tool.
FRAX combines your bone density results with factors such as:
- Age
- Sex
- Weight and height
- Previous fractures
- Family history
- Smoking
- Corticosteroid use
- Alcohol consumption
- Other medical conditions
The result is an estimate of your 10-year probability of sustaining a major osteoporotic fracture or hip fracture.
The calculator can help you better understand your overall risk—not just your bone density.
The Numbers Don’t Tell the Whole Story
As useful as these tools are, they don’t capture everything.
One of the most interesting perspectives I’ve come across is from Dr. Deborah Kado, a Stanford physician and researcher who studies aging, bone health, and musculoskeletal function.
Her work emphasizes something we don’t always hear enough about:
Strong muscles, good posture, and efficient movement patterns are essential components of bone health.
A fracture doesn’t occur simply because someone has low bone density.
More often, it happens because someone falls.
That’s where movement becomes incredibly important.
Why Pilates Can Make a Difference
One of the goals of Pilates isn’t simply building strength.
It’s improving the qualities that help you move confidently every day:
- Better posture
- Improved balance
- Greater core strength
- Hip stability
- Coordination
- Body awareness
- Functional movement patterns
These are the things that help reduce fall risk and improve confidence in everyday activities.
For many people with osteopenia or osteoporosis, learning how to move safely can be just as valuable as improving bone density itself.
Bone Health Is a Long-Term Investment
Bone health isn’t determined by a single scan.
It’s influenced by many factors working together over time:
- Progressive resistance exercise
- Weight-bearing activity
- Balance training
- Good nutrition
- Vitamin D and calcium (when appropriate)
- Healthy sleep
- Medical management
- Safe movement habits
The goal isn’t simply to improve a number on a report.
The goal is to maintain independence, confidence, and quality of life for years to come.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve recently had a bone density scan, take the time to understand your results.
Know your fracture risk.
Ask questions.
Then remember that your daily movement habits matter just as much as the numbers on the page.
At Pilates &, we focus on building strength, improving balance, enhancing posture, and developing movement confidence so you can continue doing the activities you love—today and for years to come.
