Discover why movement is more than exercise—and how building strength, mobility, balance, and sustainable habits can help you live a healthier, more active life at every age.
Most of us have been taught to think about movement as exercise.
We join a gym, sign up for a fitness class, or start walking more because we know it’s “good for us.” But somewhere along the way, movement became another item on our to-do list—something we either accomplished or failed to accomplish.
I believe movement is much more than that.
Movement is how we carry groceries without pain. It’s climbing the stairs with confidence. It’s gardening, traveling, playing with grandchildren, recovering after an injury, or simply getting up from the floor with ease.
Movement isn’t just about adding years to life. It’s about adding life to those years.
That’s why, at Pilates &, our philosophy has always been simple:
Strong body. Calm mind. Balanced life.
Why Movement Matters More Than Ever
We’re living longer than previous generations, but many of us are also living with more chronic health conditions.
Back pain, osteoporosis, arthritis, shoulder injuries, stress, reduced mobility, balance concerns, and recovery after surgery are becoming increasingly common.
Many people don’t require rehabilitation, yet they also don’t feel comfortable in a traditional fitness class.
They need something in between.
They need movement that meets them where they are.
Movement Is Healthcare
Healthcare is gradually shifting from treating illness to preventing it whenever possible.
We already know that regular movement can help improve strength, balance, mobility, cardiovascular health, bone health, mental wellbeing, and overall quality of life.
Yet many people still aren’t sure where to begin.
The goal isn’t to become an athlete.
The goal is to keep doing the activities that matter most to you for as long as possible.
That’s why I often say:
Movement is healthcare.
Not because it replaces physicians, physiotherapists, or other healthcare professionals, but because it complements the care they provide and helps people stay healthier between appointments.
The Emergence of the Movement Practitioner
As our understanding of health continues to evolve, we’re beginning to see the emergence of what I believe is a new type of professional: the Movement Practitioner.
Movement Practitioners bridge the gap between healthcare and fitness.
They understand movement science, but they also recognize that every person brings a unique health history, lifestyle, and set of goals.
Instead of asking, “How hard can you work today?”
They ask, “How can we help you move better for life?”
That philosophy has shaped the way I continue to evolve both my teaching and my programs.
How This Philosophy Is Shaping My Classes
Over the past year, conversations with students have reinforced an important lesson.
No two people arrive in class with exactly the same needs.
Some are managing osteoporosis.
Others are returning after having a baby.
Some are working through persistent shoulder or back pain.
Others simply want to stay strong, active, and independent as they age.
Rather than expecting everyone to fit into one style of class, I’ve redesigned my programs to better support these different goals.
This fall at the Coal Harbour Community Centre, you’ll find classes that place greater emphasis on specific outcomes, including:
- Core Restore – Build a stronger foundation through core strength, posture, breathing, and movement efficiency.
- Bone & Balance – Improve bone health, balance, stability, and confidence while reducing fall risk.
- Strength & Stretch – Develop functional strength while improving flexibility and mobility for everyday life.
- Strength & Flow – Build strength, coordination, and confidence through flowing Pilates movement.
Each class reflects the same Pilates principles, while recognizing that people move through different stages of life and health.
Beyond the Studio
Movement doesn’t begin and end during a one-hour class.
The habits we build between classes often have the greatest impact.
That’s why Pilates & also offers an online library of classes designed to support movement wherever life takes you.
Whether you have five minutes before work, need a gentle stretching session after gardening, want to maintain your progress while traveling, or simply need a moment to reset, movement should fit into your life—not compete with it.
More Than Exercise
At Pilates &, I don’t simply teach exercises.
I help people build sustainable movement habits that support health, confidence, and wellbeing throughout every stage of life.
Because success isn’t measured by how intensely you exercise today.
It’s measured by how well you’re able to continue doing the things you love tomorrow, next year, and decades from now.
Movement is one of the most powerful investments we can make in our future health.
And perhaps it’s time we started thinking about it as something much bigger than exercise.
